As a professional woodcrafter, my years painting in the plein air style drove me to find a field system I could rely on even in the most challenging weather conditions. A career as a maritime carpenter on a three-mast East Indiaman taught me the importance of tools and systems. Aboard ship, form follows function. Design, simplicity, and reliability are guiding principles that ensure flexibility and quality.
At a painting workshop in the countryside of Southern France, I was introduced to a simple palette box and panel holding system, attached to a lightweight aluminum tripod. Day after day, I was impressed with how easy it was to head for the field, set up and start painting and then pack up to return to the chateau.
When I returned home I went back to struggling with my traditional equipment. It wasn’t long before I knew I wanted the painting system I used in France. Applying my wood crafting experience, I fabricated components in my woodshop. After some trial and error, things came together quickly.
When I painted in the marshes, boatyard, and ocean-side locals with fellow artists, they commented on my setup. It wasn’t long before they were asking me to make them their own plein-air painting systems. Most of my work is in oil but those using acrylics, watercolorists, pastel artists, and others convinced me to try adding a full range of accessories. I was excited to see that the system retains its simplicity while readily adapting itself to individual tastes and needs.
